View and Export Ray II Panoramas

In Artec Studio 20.3(.0.84), we have added the functionality to export a Panorama that was captured alongside the 3D point cloud generated by the Artec Ray II scanner. Please follow my instruction to receive the .png or .jpg of your Panorama.

  1. In Artec Studio 20.3, open a Ray II project, or import a Ray II scan.
  2. In the workspace area on the right ensure your Ray II scan is checked.
  3. File/Export/Point Cloud
    1. Select E57 Format
    2. Check the box for Panorama and hit OK (If you plan to view in Recap also check the Color by Intensity box)
  4. Navigate to this website - Cyclone 3DR - Downloads Page and download Cyclone 3DR Viewer (free)
    1. Install Cyclone 3DR Viewer, then launch it.
    2. Drag-and-drop your .E57 into Cyclone Viewer and click Import at the bottom
    3. In the top-left you will see Cloud Group, Coordinate System, and Images Group. Hit the drop-down on Images Group.
      1. To View the Panorama, right-click the image under Images Group and click Go To Camera Viewpoint
        1. You may rotate with left-click, or zoom in-and-out with middle-mouse scroll button.
      2. To Export the Panorama, right-click the image under Images Group and click Properties. You may copy the File path, and paste it into a Windows Directory, and delete the last 'backslash' \ and everything after it, then hit enter. You may now copy your Panorama image to another location (don't keep it in User Temp folder as it will be deleted when you close the software).

Note: PNG and JPEG differences:

  • JPEG has lossy compression, which blurs pixels and discards some colors
  • PNG has lossless compression and doesn't change any pixel's data.
  • The PNG will be about 3x larger than JPEG. I recommend utilizing the PNG.
  • Comparatively, the Histogram will be more jagged on the JPEG and smoother on the PNG. The jagged spots represent lost tonal data, meaning some shades of color or brightness are no longer present.

Additional Notes:

  • The Panorama will be 9000x4500. You cannot re-import a modified panorama into Artec Studio to texture your mesh. Since point clouds do not have UV maps, the software has no way to project an edited image back onto the geometry. To get the highest possible quality texture on a Ray II mesh, you want to utilize either photo-texturing or a photogrammetry texture transfer - both options can utilize high-quality DSLR images.
