Error 1603: Fatal error during installation

Encountering "Error 1603: Fatal error during installation" error when trying to install or update Artec Studio can be caused by several issues:

  • Security Software: This is the most common cause. Using a security software like SentinelOne can sometimes falsely flag Artec Studio or one of the installation files.
This can be resolved by temporarily disabling the security software and running the installation again. It is sometimes necessary to redownload or otherwise recover the installation files.
  • Existing Software: Trying to install over an old version without proper removal.
This can be resolved by uninstalling previous unused versions, as well as removing their entries in the Windows Registry:
    • Uninstall all Artec products using the Windows 'Installed Apps' tool. That includes (but is not limited to):
      Artec Installation Center
      Artec Studio (any version)
      Artec Studio Trial (any version)
      Artec Studio Lite
      Artec Point Addon (any version)
Artec Spider II Addon (any version)
      Artec SDK
    • Press the Windows key+R, or open the Start Menu
    • Type 'regedit' and hit enter (or select the Registry Editor in the start menu after typing the same)
    • manually check the following paths for any "Artec" related entries, and remove them if they are found:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Classes\Installer\Products\
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths
      • Please note: editing the registry incorrectly can cause significant issues with your PC. Please seek assistance from Artec Support if you are unsure about editing your registry.

  • Permissions: SYSTEM account lacks full control over installation folders.
This can be solved by manually providing the SYSTEM user access and permission to the entire drive:
    1. Open File Explorer
    2. Right-click on the drive containing the installation location and select Properties
    3. Go to the Security tab and click Edit
    4. Single click on SYSTEM and ensure that the Allow box is ticked on all of the choices
    5. Do the same check for Administrators
    6. Click on OK to go back to Properties
    7. Click on Advanced
    8. Click on Change Permissions
    9. Double-click on Administrators
    10. select 'This folder, subfolders and files' for "applies to" field and tick all the available basic permissions and hit OK
    11. Do the same for SYSTEM
    12. Click on OK all the way out. You now have full permissions on that drive

  • Corrupted Files: Damaged .NET Framework or C++ redistributables.
This can be solved by updating the .NET framework and credist_64

  • System Resources: Full TEMP folders or insufficient disk space.
This can be resolved by emptying the TEMP folder and freeing up space in the C:\ drive
